Downtown retailers will take their deals outside Saturday, August 22, as one of Roanoke’s annual summer shopping events returns with dozens of participating businesses, special sales and a downtown-wide passport contest.
ROANOKE, Va. — Downtown Roanoke shoppers looking for a bargain will have plenty of places to browse this Saturday as the Downtown Roanoke Sidewalk Sale returns for another year.
The event will take place Saturday, August 22, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. throughout Downtown Roanoke, with participating retailers setting up tables outside their stores and offering end-of-season discounts, clearance merchandise and other specials.
Downtown Roanoke, Inc. organizes the annual event as a way to bring shoppers into the downtown district while giving locally owned stores and other retailers an opportunity to showcase what they have to offer. Some participating businesses will operate directly outside their storefronts, while additional vendors will be set up around Market Square.
For people who haven’t spent much time shopping downtown recently, the sale also offers a good excuse to walk the district and discover businesses they may normally drive past. Downtown Roanoke has more than 30 retailers along with more than 70 restaurants, giving visitors plenty of options to turn the sale into an afternoon downtown.
Shop, Collect Stamps and Enter to Win
This year’s event includes a Sidewalk Sale Passport designed to encourage shoppers to visit multiple participating businesses.
Visitors can begin by stopping at the Downtown Roanoke, Inc. tent in Market Square to pick up a passport. Shoppers then receive a stamp as they visit participating stores.
Once a completed passport is returned to Market Square by 5 p.m., the shopper will be entered for a chance to win a Downtown Roanoke gift basket valued at approximately $400.
According to Downtown Roanoke, the prize basket includes items donated by downtown businesses such as La De Da, Roanoke Co-op, The Little Gallery, Walkabout Outfitter, chocolatepaper, Artsy June and 310 Rosemont.
The passport adds a little more incentive to explore beyond one or two favorite stores, and the participating businesses cover a fairly wide mix of downtown shopping, from clothing and home décor to outdoor gear, art, gifts, specialty foods and locally made products.
More Than a Dozen Downtown Businesses Participating
The official Downtown Roanoke event page currently lists about 20 participating locations for Saturday’s sale.
Among them are 310 Rosemont, Artsy June, BitterSweet, The Candy Store, chocolatepaper, Crafteria: Handmade Food & Goods, The French Farmhouse, The Gift Niche, Gypsy Palooza, La De Da, Ladles & Linens, Left of Center Art Space, Mast General Store, Orvis, Roanoke Co-op, Serenity Treasures, Walkabout Outfitter and WyndRose Boutique.
The Taubman Museum of Art and Trend Formals are also scheduled to participate with setups in Market Square.
Several of those businesses are concentrated around Market Street, Church Avenue, Campbell Avenue and Salem Avenue, making much of the event easily walkable once visitors are downtown.
Instead of putting all of the sale merchandise in one centralized location, the event is designed to move shoppers through the downtown retail district. Stores will place tables outside while also inviting customers inside to see their regular inventory.
That means the event is part sidewalk sale and part downtown open house.
Parking Options Saturday
Parking is often one of the first questions people have when a downtown event is announced, but there are several options for Saturday.
According to Downtown Roanoke, Market Lot and Tower Garage will offer free parking Saturday before 4 p.m., with a $3 charge after 4 p.m.
The Elmwood Lot and Elmwood Garage offer free parking throughout the weekend.
Street parking and other public lots and garages are also available throughout the downtown area.
For anyone planning to complete the passport, parking once and walking between the participating stores may be the easiest way to experience the event.
A Chance to Support Downtown Businesses
The Sidewalk Sale comes near the end of summer, a time when many retailers are making room for fall merchandise and clearing seasonal inventory. For shoppers, that can mean some of the better discounts of the year. For businesses, it can mean increased foot traffic and an opportunity to introduce themselves to customers who haven’t visited before.
Downtown Roanoke describes the Sidewalk Sale as one of its annual signature events, joining other downtown traditions including Dickens of a Christmas, Restaurant Week and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Shamrock Festival.
Events like the Sidewalk Sale also give visitors an opportunity to make more than a shopping trip out of the day. The Historic Roanoke City Market, restaurants, museums, galleries and other attractions are all within the surrounding downtown area.
Saturday is also one of the busiest days for the Historic City Market, which has operated in Downtown Roanoke since 1882 and typically features its largest selection of market vendors on Saturdays.
So even shoppers who don’t find the deal they came looking for will have plenty of other places to stop for lunch, coffee or a walk around downtown.
